Origins

We and our estate lie in the northwestern-most corner of Rheinhessen, in Bingen am Rhein. This area looked quite different 400 million years ago. In fact, the Bingen of that age sat squarely on the equator and our current vineyards didn’t even exist.

Our prized Binger Rochusberg was created through the shifting and drifting of tectonic plates. As they collided, the earth folded onto itself, piling high into cliffs of pure quartzite that still stand today. That ancient history is the foundation for our elegant, linear wines.

Quartzite has many remarkable characteristics, not least its capacity to store warmth. The stone absorbs the heat of the sun by day and continues to radiate warmth until late in the evening, allowing fruit grown here to achieve intense ripeness. Furthermore, the stored heat creates thermal winds, which in turn promotes quick drying of the grapes. The berries can then hang longer, remaining healthy up to harvest.

We are the fourth generation to tend these 18 hectares of Riesling and Pinot varieties. Our estate has been fully organic since 2009 and biodynamic since 2012. Our grand Bingen sites Scharlachberg, Kirchberg, Osterberg and Rosengarten are the cradle of thrilling quality wines. Here in Bingen, where the Romans once cultivated wine.
